As you all know we Europeans love our holidays. Lazy as we are we string holidays together, leaving as little time as possible to spend at the office. It has also become very common to work part-time. Taking one day off to take care of your child is rule rather than exception for both men and women in my native Netherlands. Most of my friends work 80% because they have babies/infants. It would make you wonder how anything can get done with so little time spent working for the chief. As for me: I grew up in this '5 weeks holidays minimum' society but I've left it behind somewhere along the way.
When you start your own business you realize you're never really on holiday. Nor does the evening mean: kill time and watch TV. Instead I seem to be permanently attached to this thing called Internet. And not that this is bad, mind you. I also relax this way. The separation of work and leisure has never been so unclear in my life. The only one that really needed to adjust was my wife (my daughter hasn't known me any other way). A compromise was necessary. I have learned how to shut down the PC every now and then, and she now also relaxes on the net with her own laptop. The funniest scene I find is when all three of us are in the living room with our gadgets. My wife and I with our laptop, my daughter with her portable DVD player. All stuck to our little screens.
So now's the time to really disconnect. I've released a beta version of DMX 4 to a number of customers that subscribed to this and I will take a couple of weeks off. We're already in the mountains doing some hiking. Next week I hope we can go to Lac Bourget for hang gliding (I've not flown for 2 years). There's nothing quite like it to take your mind of things. You simply need all your concentration on this. So lots of greetings from us and we hope you have a great summer, too.
