    Is there a way to show the category an item belongs to in the file lists? I know you can show the collection, but it doesnt appear to be possible to show the category.

    No, unfortunately not. There is a many-to-many relation between entries and categories. Enumerating all categories for every member in the list would be too costly in terms of processing.
