Not sure where you heard that method (or maybe I didn't quite get what you tried to do) but there are two ways to 'mass import' content: either during upload of a zip file by specifying unload zip, or as admin through a special import page.
1. Unzipping during upload. This requires you to go through the regular procedure of adding a file to DMX by clicking add new item, selecting the zip file on your local PC, and then selecting the checkbox 'unzip' before hitting update.
2. Through the management interface. You are asked to enter a path on your server to the content (e.g. C:\Somefolder\MyContent) and the contents will be read. This does not unpack any zip files but will traverse any subfolders. Note that it is imperative that the asp.net worker process has access to that path or it won't read anything. That should be obvious in the first stage of import as it looks to find a list of files.
