I purchased and implemented DMX3 on my corporate site less than one year ago with the impression that I could upgrade to DMX4 without additional cost if it was released within one year from purchase (standard for most applications). Will I be able to download and install DMX4 over top of my DMX3 installation and still have an activated system that won't stop working? Thanks for providing a totally reliable web-based document management system.

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure about the industry standard thing. I don't get a free Vista for an XP machine bought 6 Months ago, or Office 2007, or etc. DMX 3 was released with 'unlimited' upgrades within the same major version. This is clearly stated. In that it follows what is common with 'big' software packages like Windows/Office/Adobe, etc. DMX 4 is going to change it to the subscription model. You get the software which still works indefinitely but you have a year of free updates (regardless of major version nr). This business model we see with component vendors (i.e. our suppliers). Both have their advantages, but they are different.

To not leave existing users in the cold I offer a 50% discount to get on the DMX 4 train. I thought that was already something. I've spent about a year preparing this release and it is not comparable to a DMX 3 upgrade.

By the way: I continue to release updates for DMX 3 at least for as long as DNN 4 is around.

Kind regards,

Peter Donker

Mr. Donker,

I respect your opinions and positions. I am a senior consultant in the Construction / IT project management space. My firm is quite aware of what is called "Investment Protection" clauses in many purchase agreements that companies are pushing out to software vendors. The argument posed by my clients is that they cannot afford to wait for new technology to be available before making improvements in business processes or project health. Therefore, they make the purchase now with the clause in the purchase agreements to protect the investment in one way or another through upgrades when they are available.

My firm is also an authorized reseller for some of the most powerful project management applications in the world. We sell these applications with a one-year guarantee of free upgrades when new versions are released within 12 months of purchase. This is because we realize the major investments that customers place in their infrastructure and business models and the customer's desire to protect their investment for ROI, IRR and NPV purposes.

Microsoft does offer investment protection benefits for operating systems purchased within 9 months of the release date for new operating systems. The same is true for their productivity tools. The way to get these benefits is to contact customer support with the purchase details and they will guide the customer to send in copies of receipts, disk documents and so forth. I have successfully done this on my personal computers and work machines.

As for DMX, I recognize that this is not a major investment, per se. And, I do appreciate your clarification that there is a discount on the upgraded version for a limited time. It is greatly appreciated. I wish you well in your future development work on a fabulous product.

With Regards,
Christopher Stimpson

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for elaborating on it. Let me know if you have any other questions and please understand that I'll do anything (well nearly) to keep my client base happy and working. I need to balance that with the need to generate enough revenue out of the sales to continue development/support.

Kind regards,
