Hi,

I recently installed the trial version of  DMX 4.01 on a development site to test the functionality. Everything is working as advertised except the "Open in Windows Explorer" webDav portion of the module. I've gone through the installation manual and modified the settings in IIS and IE7 per the "WebDAV in Document Exchange 4" document. I've tested both in Server 2003 and Vista and with IE6 and IE7 and have reviewed the forums for a similar problem but have yet to find a solution.

When I click the "Open in Windows Explorer" link it doesn't do anything. What do you suggest I do to fix the problem? The site shows up in the "Local Intranet" zone (image at the bottom right of explorer) and I don't see any javascript errors.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
1. You noticed the Vista post in this forum? MS has changed the WebDAV behavior in Vista which has caused many WebDAV implementations to fail with Vista. For your best test use XP and office 2003. This is what is used by 99% of the customers and is the first thing tested here.
2. The essential element to open directly from IE is to get IE to launch the ActiveX control to open the document in Word. Remember IE tries to prevent you as much as possible to do this as it is considered a security violation. You need to be sure unsigned ActiveX components can be started by IE. Check and double check the security settings. If you specify 'prompt' then you should at least see the little popup window asking permission to start the ActiveX control. If then Word does not start there is a faulty Office installation on the PC. If Word starts but the document is not loaded we need to look at the server again.
3. Open in Windows Explorer will, as far as I know, not work under Vista. Check out the posting on that. MS has changed the Windows WebDAV client and this will no longer function as before.

Note that I'm sure the following combination does work: Win2003/IIS6, WinXP/Office2003.

Kind regards,
Peter Donker

Peter,

Thanks for the quick reply.

1. Yes, I have tried this on Vista and it's not working for windows explorer. I think it would be helpful to show in the advertisement that it's not supported in Vista. FYI - I did get the word docs to open via web-dav in Vista, just not the windows explorer view. Also, I am able to connect to a windows explorer view of WSS 3.0 folders using Vista just not DMX. Maybe that will help you to find an alternative solution for web-dav in Vista.

2. I've also tried to run the windows explorer view in Windows 2003 and IIS6 with IE6 as the browser. It still does not allow me to open the windows explorer view, which has me thinking that there is a minor setting I need to change on my end to get DMX working for me... can you help?

{This is from previous posting: When I click the "Open in Windows Explorer" link it doesn't do anything. What do you suggest I do to fix the problem? The site shows up in the "Local Intranet" zone (image at the bottom right of explorer) and I don't see any javascript errors. I've gone through the installation manual and modified the settings in IIS6 and IE6 to allow Web-dav to run}

I bet I'm just missing something, and would appreciate your help.

3. I've read the posting, thanks.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

We're working hard to reverse engineer the new Vista WebDAV protocol to fix this. It is extremely annoying that MS has done this and they're also getting a lot of flack for it from others. My only guess is that they want to head off any competition to Sharepoint this way.

About the explorer view: have you tried to use the 'manual' way to do this by going through 'Add Network Place'? If so did this work? If not then the problem is in the webDAV tuning. If successful, however, it signifies a problem in the browser's ability to spark the Windows Explorer window.

Note that there have been issues with opening the DMX root before. i.e. http://myserver/dmxdav.axd/. Whereas any subdir would work like http://myserver/dmxdav.axd/subdir. This was in part due to the fact that the webdav handler was not being hit in the former case.

These days I'm working on the WebDAV component quite intensely. Expect a new version to some out shortly. If you want to help and test the beta version let me know on peter at bring2mind dot net.

About the 'local intranet zone': I've noticed that on some clients this still did not allow unsigned ActiveX controls to be launched. Be sure to check the details of it.

That's all I can think of right now.

Thanks,
Peter Donker
