Peter, in your Help document for using WebDAV you say:

"You will be challenged to identify yourself when necessary and a cookie is stored at the client. However, the cookie for WebDAV is not the same as the one for the browser. This is a technical issue and has to do with the WebDAV protocol. As a result the following can happen: if you log out of DNN with the web browser, and you’re still logged into WebDAV, the latter will stay alive (note it does not work the other way around)."

This is exactly what I observed: I log out from the site, but via Windows Explorer I can still browse the DMX folders without having to re-authenticate. Only after a couple of hours idle time the WebDAV session apparently is timed out because I am prompted to authenticate again.

Can you tell how I can disconnect/close the WebDAV session? And where is the cookie for the WebDAV session stored (I can't find it on the IE cookie list)?

Regards, Mathias

Mathias,

The cookie is called 'dmxdavcookie' I believe and can be observed using a tool like Fiddler. The only reliable way to get rid of it is to clear out the cookie cache on your browser. WebDAV is http and therefore connectionless. This brings about this complexity.

Perhaps someone could direct me to a more relevant topic, although this discussion seems like a start in the right direction.  Is windows explorer using a cookie set in Internet Explorer to do authentication?  Or is this about the option where you can explore the directory using windows explorer?  I'm interested in using the mapped drive feature of windows to support the integration of legacy desktop applications into my portal environment, so I'm trying to gain a better understanding of how DMX authenticates users for accessing the webdav folders.  Thanks.

Hi Patrick,
Yes, we're using a cookie set in IE to bridge between Windows and the web interface. But we also have a backup authentication mechanism in case the cookie is not there. In that case you get a challenge and you fill in your dnn account and you'll be in. This way you can map the DMX contents as a network drive in Windows.

Once the web folder connection is created, is there any way to mount the folder as a Letter Drive name?  I tried to do this in Windows XP, but when I select a web folder, it does not highlight the OK button.  Would it be possible to mount the webdav share as a lettered drive name if I somehow changed the current configuration from "http://www.example.com/path/to/dmxdav.axd" to "http://dmxdav.example.com/"?

Hi Patrick,

I'm able to mount as a drive. Use the http address in Map Network Drive. Choose 'other credentials' and enter your dnn login. Then make sure it memorizes them (check save password). Having said all this I've noticed some difficulty with DMX 04.03.00 with login using XP (but some people did report good logins with XP as well) that I've addressed in the upcoming version 04.03.01.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the update.  I am using 04.02.02 in Windows XP, and when I clicked on my web folders for the first time, I enter my DNN credentials and it logs me in with no problem.  When I tried to map a network drive to the same target as the web folder, I am constantly prompted for my credentials and it never seems to authenticate.  Do I need to change the URL to get this to work?  I.e. do I need to strip out the %20's and replace them with spaces?  Or is the URL the same in both cases?  Thanks.

Patrick

I just discovered that Windows XP is trying to connect to http://mydomain/path/to/dmxdav.axd/ and not the full path that I specify. I remember reading somewhere that the root directory of dmx is not accessible, so does this mean my Windows XP can not browse the dmx share? Will an upgrade fix that?

Hi Patrick,

The upgrade should fix that. I have recently worked on related issues for the upcoming version 04.03.01.
