I"m in the process of setting up DMX on one machine, but I'm hearing rumblings of moving our servers to a datacenter, and creating a brand new portal.

Is it possible to install DMX on the new machine and then just copy the table data over to the new portal and blow away the old portal?  Really don't want to have to do all the work twice.

thanks,

M@

I'm just going to move it now, how do I disable one DMX installation and enable another?

Hi Matt,

No need. Just reactivate on the new machine. Contact me by email if anything goes wrong: peter at bring2mind dot net.

BTW about your earlier question of porting data: that is pretty tricky. DMX data is intricately tied to some portal dependent data like roles and users (through IDs). If these do not correspond then it is very hard. You're better of exporting all content (Admin > Run Scripts) and then reimporting that on the new installation. This just does the folders and files though. Categories, permissions, and custom attributes are lost in this process.

If data actually corresponds (i.e. user IDs and role IDs) you can see about using a tool like SQL Data Compare by Red Gate. But note there are no guarantees here. I've not seen it done successfully yet.
