Hello Peter,

I am trying to create a custom attribute that asks for the author of a document.  I am unsure about how to use the 'custom' field when creating a custom string attribute.  How can I input a list of names the user can choose from, so he/she just types their initials in?

I know I can make a 'select' attribute, and populate a drop-down menu for the user.  I don't like this option because if the user does not know who the author is, or for any reason does not want to fil it in, the attribute will default to the first name from the drop down menu and show up in the metadata.

Hi Glenn,

The 'standard' custom attributes are pretty basic. It serves a first need for adding custom fields. As soon as you get specific, though, it's common to find they don't quite fit the bill. That is why this mechanism is extensible. In your case I'd say you need a custom control that does exactly what you want. Check out the API forum for more ideas and discussions on this.
