I have purchased and installed version 5.02.01 on a new install of DNN 5. We have been running version 3.04.08 of DMX on DNN version 3.2.2.

What is the best way to upgrade/import my old 3.04.08 documents into the new version?

I tried copying the tables into the new DNN 5 database and then installing DMX, but I get multiple errors because the tables already exist.

Ok, I'll admit it, I was lazy and didn't read enough before posting.

I now understand the difficulty in moving from one portal to another. All of the Id(users, roles, etc) fields are unique to that DNN installation, so all the keys would be wrong.

Sorry for the chatter.

Were you able to upgrade from 3.4.8 to 5.2.1 directly? I need to go from 3.4.6 to 5.2.1 or latest. Any information on how you tackled would be appreciated.

Same thing here. Moving from 3.05.02 to the newest DMX. Any word of advice on doing this the easiest way? It's not a problem with the roles, I can create those along the way. Its more a question of getting the correct exchanges created and having the right files in each and everyone.

Upgrading is not an issue. There is a script included that you have to run after install. This is described in the installation manual.

David attempted to install the new DMX in another installation I believe and then import old content from the old portal. That is not possible as he found out as User IDs and Role IDs are all different.

Hey Peter,
Well I am actually also in the process of moving the DMX content from one installation to another, not just upgrading.

Hi Lars,

Only an upgrade of the installation itself will preserve data. Trying to move data from one installation to another (or even one portal to another) requires so much fiddling you'll abondon it quickly. The snag is that all data is tied to user ids and role ids. Plus all content is often auto numbered in the primary keys. So it is really difficult to do. In fact the only way I think would be to export and then import again. But you'd need a tool to get all DMX 3 data out. That is probably not too hard.

Hi Peter,

"Only an upgrade of the installation itself will preserve data"

So, if you have say DMX 3 on DNN 4.6 for example on a Hosted Server.

Now if I wanted to upgrade the DNN installation to 5.2 and upgrade to DMX 5  on a new Host.

Are these the basic steps ?

1. Setup a DNN verision e.g. 4.6 that matches your hosted DNN version locally.

Copy the WebSite and DNN Database.

Change PortalAlias table to your local website.

Setup the DNN website to run locally ( might be a bunch of things here )

2. Upgrade local DNN 4.6 to DNN 5.2.2

3. Then install the DMX 5 module on top of the DMX 3 ( how to to this ?)

4. Now copy the WebSite and Database to a new Host

Change the PortalAlias Table to your Domain URL.

Peter: "In fact the only way I think would be to export and then import again. But you'd need a tool to get all DMX 3 data out. That is probably not too hard."
Not sure how this would work, can you give details on this ?

Thanks, LA Guy ( Paul )

Hoping for some guidance  on the steps for moving and upgrading DMX 3 to DMX 5 ( DNN 5.2.2 ) on new Host.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,

To upgrade you need the old installation. You can copy it to your new location if you wish. Then upgrade DNN and DMX (order doesn't matter).

Looking at your list I can't see anything wrong with it. I think you got it right.

Hi Naveed,

Do you see anything in the DNN event log?

Note this is an error in DMX 3. Officially we've stopped supporting DMX 3 as it has been succeeded 3 years ago. If it is an easy fix, however, we might still release a fix.

Hi Peter,
We have an old DMX installation version 3.5.2 with a lot of Document Exchanges on. Some of these needs to be archived and some needs to be transferred to a new installation of DMX version 5.2.2.
If I upgrade version 3.5.2 to a newer version, would it be possible to transfer some of the Document Exchanges to the 5.2.2 installation? Or is this totally out of the question?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Lars,

I'm not quite sure I understood completely, but maybe this will help:

1. DMX 5 updates DMX 3. So your data is preserved. Upload a DMX 5 into a DNN with DMX 3 updates the data. You need to run a script after install but this is described in the installation manual.

2. If you upgrade an installation with a new DMX then ALL DMX instances (ie. in all portals, on all pages) will be updated. You can't mix DMX 3 and 5 in a single installation.

3. If you want to separate portals from a DNN installation the only way to do this is to make a complete copy of the installation and delete the non-desired portals. There is no way to transfer data from one portal in one DNN installation to another portal in another DNN installation. Note there are licensing implications as you need to have a DMX license for each DNN installation you use it in.
