Still on 3.5.6. Do I need to upgrade before I can upgrade to DNN 5.6?

Hi Peter,
Over the weekend my host tried to update our DNN installs to the latest version (5.6.1) but they were unsuccessful. Their concern is that one (or more) of our 3rd party modules isn't compatible with the latest version of DNN. We are still using DMX 3.5.6, which I know has been out for quite some time. Do you think that this might be causing some of our problems?

This is the quote from their tech support:
"The problem that we are experiencing is that when we go up to 5.6.1 the site is constantly resetting the connection when attempting to load. We haven't been able to narrow down this issue yet, but it could be a third party module that is causing this."

thanks,
Dave

I successfully host many sites running DNN 5.6.1 & DMX 5.3.5 (and one running 5.6.2 Alpha) with 100% success. I can assure you that whatever issue your host provider is having, it's not DMX.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I appreciate it. However, we are running DMX 3.5.6. Unless you mistyped the versions that your clients are running, this doesn't really help. Hopefully you meant 3.x.x?

Hi Dave,

Indeed 3.5.6 is old. I can't guarantee that any one version remains compatible indefinitely and we halted the v3 track back in 2007. If you want to stay with this version of the module you may give DMX Lite a try. This is a branch of the DMX 3 which we intend to keep compatible going forward. For now Lite is sold through Snowcovered only. Note it does not support content indexing like 3.5.6 did. It is really meant as a slimmed down DMX compared to the main product.

Honestly Peter, I would love to upgrade to the latest version. Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of if we decide to upgrade DMX to the latest version?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Not really. Just make sure your DNN is 4.9.5 or higher (preferably DNN 5.5/6). Then just install and you'll find a script under Admin > Run Scripts to migrate data from an old DMX 3 version.

O, one more thing: try this in a test environment first. Always.

Thanks Peter,
I've looked at your Buy section and I'm a little confused as to what flavor of DMX I need. We currently only use DMX as a back-end repository for documents, but we use it on 2 different DNN installs. I'm hoping that in the future we can use it as a front end to a knowledge base, but we haven't gotten there yet. I'd love to upgrade to your full version (not the Lite version), but since we need it for 2 installs, it appears I would need to purchase the Enterprise version, but the cost is prohibitive. What is your recommendation?

Hi Dave,

Then it is a lot more advantageous to buy two regular licenses.

Best,

PS, buy one first and then buy the second separately to benefit from a 10% reduction on the second license ...

Thanks. Just to clarify, what exactly is the difference between DMX 5 and DMX 5 Pro? Is it that Pro allows unlimited portals within an install while regular 5 is limited to 25 portals? Are there any other differences?

Indeed. The only reason I decided to call it "Pro" was because it was how I saw someone who wanted to serve more than 25 portals on a DNN install ... Functionality is the same though.

Thanks for all the info Peter. Hopefully I can buy the upgrades today and get them installed this weekend so we can do our DNN upgrade next weekend.

Thanks again,
Dave

Ok, I've purchase the first one. When will the download show up in the "My Orders" page? Also, how do I get the 10% off the 2nd purchase? Through your order system, I now see that if I'd bought them both at the same time, the discount is automatically applied, but you advised me to buy one, and then buy the 2nd separately. Let me know.

Hi Dave,

It should have by now. You should also see the discount automatically appear. Let me know if it doesn't.

Hi Peter,
I just want to say thanks for all your guidance. I was successfully able to install DMX 5 on a testing site (although it's running DNN 5.5.1 instead of 5.4.2 which is what my live sites are running) and so far, everything looks like it updated fine.
