We have a repository of mostly PDF files. The goal is to configure searching of these files. One of the requirements is to store the files using their native extensions. If we turn off this function, what happens to our existing files? Are they renamed or ignored? What are the possible problems we will run into if we make this change?

In a related note, I've been searching the forums for a point-by-point guide of configuring PDF searches, but the information is spread out amongst many posts. One of said posts says you do not have additional information to provide as its a Windows, not a .NET thing. I think it would be helpful for everyone to have a simple "try these standard steps", i.e. install this, configure this, etc. No need for advanced functions, but a simple "Get Started" guide would be nice.

Thanks!

Hi Brendon,

1. When you switch the extension renaming nothing happens to the existing content. That is one reason why there is a script for this under Admin > Run Scripts. Use that to go from one to the other.

2. PDF indexing: needs Acrobat iFilter on the server installed. That's all there is to it. And it helps to run full trust when using the default Lucene indexer.

Thanks Peter for the reference to the script. I would not have found it! As well as confirmation these are the only steps needed for PDF searches. Other posts online made it seem there were additional steps that might be required. Thanks for clarifying it is that simple.
