hide categories new file upload

We are using categories on the admin page with the module. Is it possible to place the control on another page for general users, but hide or turn off the categories option when they go to upload a file. I want them to fill out the other stuff just not select any of the categories.

Not really. Note the Letterbox extension was meant to cover similar scenarios where you want to "dumb down" the upload process. If you still want the full DMX experience but want to eliminate the categories you could set the root category for the module they are using to upload to to an end node in the category tree. Then no categories are shown in the edit screen any longer. And neither on the main UI of that instance for that matter.
