Hi,

I have a problem with the RSS feed from DMX 6.01.

I am running it on a hosted site (on the latest DNN) and I have several instances of DMX installed - one for Records and one for Documents. I want to use the RSS to inform about documents that have been entered. I have enabled the RSS for each of the instances and there is content in at least one of them. When I paste the URL of the feeder into the consumer - I have tried two different ones - nothing happens or it is being reported that the feed is not a RSS feed.

On my site, I know the RSS consumer works because I have pasted the URL from another module.

The strange thing is that on my localhost, DMX works OK

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

If you click on the RSS icon do you see it then? It could be related to this:

Peter, the RSS icon is visible and when I click on it, I can see data - a short extract follows:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

<br /> <copyright>Copyright 2011 by Seafloor Geophysical Solutions</copyright> <br /> <link> <br /> <a href="http://www.intra.seafloorgeosolutions.com/Admin/SGSConfig.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.intra.seafloor...Admin/SGSConfig.aspx</a> <br /> </link> <br /> <language>en-US</language> <br /> <description>Document Exchange Feed</description> <br /> <item> <br /> <title>MOM 26 Oct 11 BOD
This is a scanned copy

Re the bug description above, I am not capable to judge whether it is related or not. I know that the feed doesn't work, but I don't know what I have to do to fix it. I guess you are saying that I have to wait until the next DNN update and see whether it is fixed or not ?

I have an Articles module installed on the same site, this module also produces an RSS feed and that works OK. This indicates that the problem is related to the DMX instances.

After submitting, the copied part of the XML file was not shown, I retry by inserting " in front of the lines:
"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
"

XML won't work here but I could see it when editing your post. I can't see what is wrong with it (the extract is somewhat small, but starts fine). The RSS follows the RSS conventions. Does the RSS consumer not give any details why it didn't like the feed? What consumer is this?

Peter,

I have been using two RSS consumers:

1. Coding Staff Feed Burner - this give the following response when I paste the URL, http://intra.YYYY.com/Des...Id=122&ModuleId=533, into the feed definition:

"RSS feed URL is not valid. Please, verify the URL and try again."

As mentioned above - this works fine on my local machine, but at the local there is only one portal.

2. Taknology Feed Reader Lite: This module does not provide any error messages or any information for that matter.

I am hosting DNN/DMX with PowerDNN and have recently made sure that the infrastructure is upto date; i.e., .Net 4.0 and IIS 7.5. On this site, I can successfully use both of the above feedconsumers with another module: Nuntio Articles.

You will need to take it up with them. AFAIK the RSS feed is conform the RSS standard. So the ball is in their court. Please let me know what they think.

Peter,

I have now established the following:

1) When I upload a document to DMX and the Permission of that document is set to "All users", the RSS consumers (three different now) will all accept the DMX feed and display the content correct. This is regardless of the DMX RSS seeting: Public documents.

2) When I set the Permission level to "Registered users" or anything else, then the RSS consumers will not accept the URL and will not display.

I have tested with three different RSS consumers and they all accept feeds from different modules within my site and also external feeds (Snowcovered).

Based on the above; I will suggest that there may be two options:

a) There is something wrong with the way DMX interfaces with the consumers - how the URL adress is used.

b) That all three consumers can not handle permission levels other than "All users".

In case of a) - please advice, as I believe it is not consistent with the WYSIWIG thinking given in your documentation.

In case of b) - please advice which RSS consumer will actually work with DMX so that there can be a differentiation on the permission levels on the documents.

This has nothing to do with RSS but with the way DNN works. DNN has no authentication possibility for services (yet). This means that if you ask for a protected resource you get a login page for DNN. This is not something the module developer is in charge of, it is a framework thing. Obviously the login page is gobbledegook for the RSS reading software. Here is an entry in the DNN bug list for it:

Peter,

When I started this thread, I wanted to use DMX functionality for informing users about documents that have changed or been added within the last (say) 30 days.

It was my understanding that using DMX's RSS feed would be the way such requirement was met in DMX.

Based on the findings above and your last entry, it appears that DNN does not support and has not supported this kind of functionality. The exception being when the permission level on the documents are set to "All users", which negates the excellent fine masked access control to the documents.

It is not clear to me if and when DNN will support this functionality. Therefore, is there another way than using the RSS to inform users about changes in the document collection?

Exposing the module to All Users doesn't expose its content to all users. The permissions on folders/files are still observed. If you request the RSS feed you pass through the module permissions first. Then DMX checks what your login status is and serve out the RSS accordingly. If your user is unauthenticated the feed will only return documents that are visible to All Users. If the user is authenticated then documents visible to that user will be mixed in.

Peter,

In my last post I said it was the Documents that had to be "all users" permission for the RSS consumers to present the feed. What you describe above is not happening, at least not on my sites.

However, I have solved my problem by installing your extension "Whats new", and that works and it is good enough for my users for the time being.
