Is it possible to display the file extensions in the main window?

With some custom scripting, sure. I've not done it before but the info is there. You'll need to delve into how the UI is built (ViewCollection.ascx). The extension can be parsed from the field "OriginalFilename" which is available to the list.

*Please* consider making this an Admin option. Depending on tiny document icons is a fairly unreliable way to guess at a file's type and extension.
